In Mexico, «until July 8th, there have been 22,274 confirmed cases and 49 deaths,» pointed out the General Director of Health Promotion, Agustín López González, who emphasized that «it is essential to eliminate all types of mosquito breeding grounds, protect oneself from bites, and seek timely medical attention in case of symptoms.»
I remember that dengue is an illness caused by a virus that is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. It can become complicated and fatal, and anyone can suffer from it, even those who have been infected before.
The official explained that the mosquitoes that transmit the dengue virus inhabit a significant portion of the country, primarily in cities, as they find necessary resources to survive: shaded areas to rest, people from whom to obtain blood for feeding, and numerous containers where water is stored.
The report indicated that the signs and symptoms include fever and at least one of the following: intense headache, nausea or vomiting, general discomfort, muscle or joint pain, pain behind the eyes, and rash.
The severe symptoms of the illness include: intense abdominal pain, fatigue, persistent vomiting or vomiting with blood, drowsiness, and bleeding from the gums and nose, in urine or feces.
People at the highest risk of developing severe dengue include infants under one year old, individuals over 65 years old, pregnant women, and those with uncontrolled underlying health conditions. Currently, there is no specific treatment available, therefore the approach is focused on symptom management.
López González stated that in Mexico, the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) has approved a vaccine for this disease for commercialization. However, using it on individuals who have not contracted dengue poses risks, therefore mass application is not recommended.
It is recommended that if a person shows symptoms, they should not self-medicate, but instead go to the nearest health facility, drink plenty of water, and rest.
